In the realm of social media conferences, Social Media Marketing World (SMMW) is the crown jewel. Attendees are treated to the best the industry has to offer in a two-day free-for-all of breakout sessions, parties, speakers, keynotes, and more. My goal was to glean a deeper understanding of the analytical side of Facebook Ads. I left more obsessed with Pinterest, Facebook Live, and an app that could change the game for Instagram.
I have returned from this land of wonder with a few takes, served piping hot just for you, about what I learned from the heroes of social media marketing.
There is no magic potion for Facebook Ads.
I’d been holding out hope for some sort of definitive method to make every Facebook Ad I run have a Relevancy Score of 11 and be so cheap that our clients’ ROI would be through the roof. However, after a few years of learning the ins and outs of successful ad campaigns, I’ve realized that such a method simply doesn’t exist.
The experts at Social Media Marketing World concur: to garner the results people foam at the mouth for, you have to have good content, solid research on potential audiences, vigilant experimentation and tweaking, stellar targeting tactics, and the courage to think outside the box and try something different.
Jon Loomer is a virtually unrivaled resource I had the privilege of seeing on day one of SMMW. His webinars have been an enormous help to me in the last year or so in the vein of not only strategy, but for walkthroughs of the constant stream of new features Facebook Ads gives us. In the end, however…
Good content still reigns supreme.
Write about anything under the sun, throw tons of money at your content, and automatically be successful, right? While you may find mild success with that strategy, at the end of the day it’s going to be that compelling, home run piece of content that gets you where you want to go.
I was lucky enough to see Confluence Conference 2016 keynote speaker Larry Kim once again at SMMW, and his strategy for promoting your “unicorns” on Facebook and Twitter is, for lack of a better word, genius. The best part about it is it’s the kind of genius that everyone can understand, which makes Larry’s strategy even more convincing.
The abridged version is this: post lots of your content to Twitter organically. Post your content that does well on Twitter to LinkedIn and Facebook, and then use a small amount of budget to promote the top performers on Facebook and Twitter. I am obsessed with Tailwind.
When I first met Melissa Megginson, Marketing Manager at Tailwind, her passion about the Pinterest and Instagram management tool immediately made me want to learn more about what it could actually do. If you’re not doing video, start doing it right now.
No matter what you’re doing on Facebook today, there’s a good chance you’ll come across a video and stop to watch most of it, even if you have no idea what it’s about. Video is one of the most powerful tools on social media and you should be taking advantage of it. What’s more, doing great video for your business doesn’t have to break the bank. Facebook Live from your computer, tablet, or phone can be the perfect way to get started to generating more leads and potentially more sales through the platform, but not without careful planning.
Amy Porterfield spoke to the importance of setting a solid promotional plan for building up to your Facebook Live event that had my brain whirling with ideas 10 minutes into her presentation. She even gave everyone a little cheat sheet to take away with a list of action items to help you hype up your Facebook Live event up to a month out. How cool is that?
Never stop learning.
For all the speakers I saw, all the contemporaries I met, and all the delicious local brew I was fortunate enough to sample, I can proudly say I walked away with something of substance from Social Media Marketing World: We never stop learning. If there ever comes a day where I think I know everything there is to know about marketing I’ll gladly hang it up and move to Tokyo to open a taco shop.
The perpetual cycle of discovery, understanding, and action is something that should drive all of us to be better marketers. That doesn’t go for just us either. We should feel inspired to do better by our clients or the company we work for. Thanks to sunny San Diego and everything that came with it, I’ve learned that my journey for knowledge is far from over and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it.
